Rich in Potent Bioactive Compounds

Herbs and spices are often unsung heroes in the world of health and nutrition, and star anise is no exception.

It is a remarkable source of several powerful bioactive compounds, all of which play a vital role in promoting good health.

The most valuable component of star anise lies in its rich supply of flavonoids and polyphenols, which are primarily responsible for the spice’s wide-ranging applications and medicinal benefits.
Some of the key health-promoting compounds found in star anise include:

  • Linalool

  • Quercetin

  • Anethole

  • Shikimic acid

  • Gallic acid

  • Limonene

Together, these compounds contribute to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties of star anise.
Some research suggests that the spice’s antioxidant capacity may even have anti-cancer potential, such as reducing tumour size.

Antiviral Potential

One of the most pharmacologically relevant features of star anise is its high content of shikimic acid.
Shikimic acid is a compound with strong antiviral properties and is, in fact, one of the primary active ingredients in Tamiflu, a widely used medication for treating influenza.
Currently, star anise is the main source of shikimic acid used in pharmaceutical production. As the threat of flu pandemics continues to rise, the demand for star anise is increasing.
Some test-tube studies have also indicated that star anise essential oil may be effective against other viral infections, including Herpes simplex virus type 1.

Antifungal Properties

Star anise is a rich source of the flavonoid anethole, which is responsible for its distinctive flavour and provides powerful antifungal benefits.
Certain agricultural studies have found that trans-anethole derived from star anise may inhibit the growth of pathogenic fungi in some edible crops.
Test-tube research suggests that other bioactive compounds in star anise essential oil, such as the terpene linalool, may suppress biofilm formation and cell wall development in infectious fungi affecting humans.

Antibacterial Benefits

Another significant medicinal benefit of star anise is its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria linked to a variety of common illnesses.
Some research has revealed that Illicium verum extract is as effective as antibiotics against multiple drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. This could be particularly valuable for the future development of new antibiotic treatments.
Test-tube studies have also shown that bioactive compounds in star anise may be effective in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by different bacterial strains.
A separate study demonstrated that star anise extract is effective in reducing the growth of E. coli.

About the Herb

Star anise (Illicium verum) is an aromatic, medium-sized evergreen tree native to northeastern Vietnam and southwestern China. The tree produces distinctive star-shaped fruits, which are harvested just before ripening and dried to create the widely known spice. With its warm, licorice-like flavour, star anise is a staple in both culinary traditions and herbal medicine.

Historically, star anise has been used in Chinese and Indian traditional medicine for centuries, particularly for its ability to aid digestion and relieve respiratory conditions. It has also been a key ingredient in traditional herbal remedies for colds, flu, and infections. The spice gained global recognition when it became the primary natural source of shikimic acid, a key ingredient in antiviral medications such as Tamiflu.

Beyond its medicinal uses, star anise has been highly valued for its aromatic essential oil, which is widely used in cosmetics, perfumery, toothpaste, and personal care products. It has also been a crucial component of various spice blends, including Chinese five-spice and Indian masala chai.

Today, star anise remains an important herb in both traditional and modern herbal medicine, known for its antiviral, antibacterial, and digestive-supporting properties. Its unique flavour and health benefits continue to make it a cherished spice and remedy worldwide.
